Best Sellers of 2017
As the year draws to a close, it’s time for our look back at the best selling graphic novels and issues at all of our stores!
We see a lot of returning faces from 2016, as Image Comics remains predominant in the graphic novel part of the industry, with super popular titles like Saga and Monstress and Paper Girls continuing strong!
Marvel’s explosive Black Panther series by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze did just as well in collected form.
Our local favorites Zodiac Starforce stayed on the top as well!
Past these, several series did really well at one or two of our stores, but nothing was dominant across the board, showing both individual favorites at our stores as well as regional tastes, so we’ve picked a few for the cover image, including our own new local comics anthology, Big Planet Comics: Red!
Hellcat was a huge hit in our Vienna store, and the new sequel to The Legend of Korra as well. Newsprints was a new YA title that broke out fast! House of Penance was a great horror hit.
Image Comics dominated our U St store, taking 14 of the top 20 spots! Black Panther and Batman and the Big Planet Comics anthologies were the only other books to make it!
Princeless stayed top of the pack in our College Park store, as well as The Doorman by Kendall Goode who worked at the store! Our bestsellers reflect the impact of the College Park Graphic Novel book club, and the Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook made it thanks partly to our D&D games we have been hosting.
Bethesda stays strong in the younger readers with Amulet, Ghosts and DC Super Hero Girls, as well as The Little Mermaid, thanks to the signing by Scottish/French duo Metaphrog!

And here are the top 20 bestselling issues in 2017 from our stores!
Marvel Legacy was a huge hit, showing the hunger for some great classic storytelling from Marvel. Other big ones of course included their Secret Empire crossover, but the relaunch of X-Men: Gold showed the thirst for some great X-Men again. DC probably has had an even greater success with their new Dark Nights: Metal series, who doesn’t love weird dark twists on Batman and big crossovers? But Doomsday Clock has barely started and already is climbing to the top – a sequel to Watchmen and a crossover with the DC Universe is hard to beat!
Flash and Batman’s crossover The Button got a lot of interest, as it leads into Doomsday Clock.
And Saga and Walking Dead had a few huge issues due to their 25 cent issues to celebrate 25 years of Image.
Zodiac Starforce of course did huge in Vienna where the writer Kevin is our manager! Batman: White Knight is a cool new one with the Joker being cured.
America Chavez’s first series was a huge hit in the U St store.
And Black Panther stayed strong in the U St. and College Park stores (2 issues tied for 9th place in College Park!)
